Hi, there!
This blog is hosted by the students of Prof. Martha Ladly's 2nd Year "Creative Think-Tank" class at the Ontario College of Art and Design.
We are working to realize a series of BIG IDEAS: simple ideas that will challenge the status quo, and make the College a more sustainable, healthier, better place to work, create and study. And we want your help to make them happen...
Here's one of our ideas:
We want to convince the OCAD Administration to create green plantings throughout the College, and to install a green roof on at least one of the College buildings.
INSIDE THE COLLEGE
Plants release valuable oxygen into the atmosphere, and help absorb and filter pollutants. The OCAD Campus is occupied for long hours a day by students who are over-worked and stressed, and who use a wide range of solvents and other harmful materials.
Green plantings throughout our Campus will improve AND beautify our studio environment. Who needs good air in our work/study space? We do!!
OUTSIDE THE COLLEGE
More and more schools, businesses and governments are including planted "green" roofs in the design of their new buildings and the renovation of existing ones.
Not only does a planted roof add valuable green space to the community, it also:
- reflects sunlight, cooling the building & surroundings in summer
- adds insulation, warming the building in winter
- retains rainwater & snow, reducing load on the City water system
- protects the building's roof & lengthens its lifespan
To plant the roofs of all the OCAD buildings is a pricey proposition, one that the College found too expensive for the new Sharp Centre building. But what about a small pilot project, on the original OCAD building at 100 McCaul?
We want to hear what you think about this "big.idea @ ocad":
- Do you support it?
- Where would you like to see plantings?
- What would YOU change to make OCAD more sustainable?
At the end of term, we will present this blog and all your comments to OCAD Administrators, as part of a Class Submission designed to convince them to make a greener, healthier Campus for everyone that studies and works at OCAD.
Let us know what you think! Comment on our posts, let the Administration that you want a "green", healthy College!
